On 29 December 2023, the South African government initiated a case against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague for a possible violation of the Genocide Convention. The official title is: ‘Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel)’.

With this step, the South African government has provoked a heated debate at the political and academic level about whether the Israeli army’s actions in Gaza can be classified as genocide.

On 31 August 2025, the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) published a resolution in which the authors declare that, in their view, all criteria for genocide have been met with regard to the actions of the Israeli army in Gaza.
